My presentation focuses on the conceptual artist Jenny Holzer and her use of text in public art. She is of a branch of feminist artists emerging in the 80's who were especially interested in new ways to make a narrative or commentary on visual objects. Holzer's uses found text and mixed media to create a new interaction with institutional, political and consumerism critique. Beginning with anonymous one-liners she calls "Truisms" that shes publicly displayed in New York -- from attacking billboards and small advertisements to projections on buildings. Her work provokes reflection on a range of political and societal matter including the Iraq War, the rapes of the Bosnian War and the effects of media such as news and advertisement.
