The First Line

The First Line combines traditional collage like those of Picasso with everything that came to follow. This includes some obvious references to Andy Warhol's Pop Art and goes as far as making claim that  sampling is a means of collage through music. Begging the questions what is borrowing, what is copying, what is stealing, and what is original? The First Line seeks to filter and synthesize other works of art into one piece giving the viewer not a new experience of existing material, but a new material all together.

My process began with my home. Brown University is a different place for me, so much so that my mind drifts back to people, places, and events from my hometown daily. The collage project offered an excuse to do this in a creative and productive setting, therefore, I immediately went to work on compiling images found online into my iPhoto library. After exhausting online blogs and online newspaper archives I had the collection I wanted and began to process them in Photoshop. Somewhere during the time I was compiling photos, I learned of sampling contest at Tri-C back home (The community college). I checked out the music available to sample, found a song I really liked and saw it as a great opportunity to incorporate another thing I truly enjoy and often use to represent my home town. Me and a friend who are currently producing our own Hi-Hop album made a beat to accompany the collage and thus came my choice to print from the Epson here at 135 Thayer. My vision was to play a rap song from some old vintage speakers with the collage posted on the sides. Unfortunately this didn't come together exactly as planned, but I adapted, adjusted, and improved the work into what it is now. Although not the entirety of my process, that is pretty much the progression of my collage project through it's current standing.

My rap name is Rah_Sol if anybody cares and here's some of the lyrics for the song.

Jus me in the back seat back row
Back ground of a loss and my last hope
Hope you listen to the rhythm in a fast flow
Soul authentic gotta get it when I pass go
But cash flow, won't get you up a mountain
I"m a dream like a penny in a fountain
Down and not quite done so I doubt when
Others try to count me out like accountants
Don't care, feel the freedom of a real verse
Movin something in me every time I rehearse
IF you wanna let it go let it be let it grow
To a dream that allows you to feel her
Love in the passion of a struggle that i know well
Tired of saying 'Fuck it! I don;t even care. Ohh well'
All about a clique, so I hustle for the outcome
Only givin' everything even if it goes well
You never know, so you better love life
Plenty of us die, bein' left aint right
So I write for the change and illuminate miss
Go hard all day to alleviate nights when
All I feel is the drama of my past days
Let my passed ways fall from a cascade
As I pass you the passion of it hand made
First time you've ever seen a phoenix from an ash tray
Dream a life of a rebel in a movement
Ark for the arts bringing truth to the music
Fuse lit, feel it live when I do this
I can see a way to change life when I use this
Right, gotta get it right some way
Gotta get a place for my momma some day
Cus she been wit it through the drama, so I gotta repay
That love, show the world I'm here lil sun ray

And Everybody says don't worry but it's killin me
That every one still back home doesn't get to be
Here wit me now feelin Ivy league stability
I'd leave it in a second if it led to led to their tranquility
But my responsibility is channel this ability
instead and make a better life for everyone you didn't see
That coulda but they never will and if that isn't clear enough
It's everything and everyone that lies upon my city streets
I went to four schools public education
None left, where they stood is just pavement
Didn't think I'd say that at 20 years old
Made me think about the memories and all the lost faces

I donno if it's okay
I donno if I'm embarrassed
I donno if there's an answer
If there is it's not apparent
I donno if I'm gone make it
I donno that's why I'm starin
At the stars I cry alone
so you don't ever have to hear it
I donno if it's okay
I donno if I'm embarrassed
I donno if there's an answer
If there is it's not apparent
I donno if you can understand
or if Im just to different
But the only way I stay alive
Is music love and carin' so

Please don't judge
Please don't judge
Please don't judge
Please don't judge

Roll wit me just a little longer please
So I can bleed every demon that I need to leave
And relieve every thought that I need to free
My lost breathe till I'm once again free to breath
Just roll wit me fam a little longer please
If you can hold on now we can all succeed
I know I say it all the time from a world away
But I'm begin y'all to still be stronger please
Jus roll wit me fam a little longer please
Cus it's known my brother didn't get a degree

But it truly unfair and I want em to see
So jus roll wit me man a little longer please
Because I still believe and it's beyond a dream
