My project is an appropriated newspaper dispenser (and a previous art project of another Brown student) containing a copy of the Bible, a literary work in the public domain. The contents inside the dispenser are free and open to the public, but breaking into the dispenser (the coin operation no longer functions) is defacement of private property and destruction of a piece of art. Like Article 11 in the WIPO Copyright Treaty of 1996, circumvention of the protective barrier around the work (aka breaking in to get the contents) is illegal, but taking the work inside is not (in this case, it is in the public domain and open to all who care to use it). This project is a physical representation of internet copyright law, reflecting the brainteaser it presents.
