medium: hot pink barbie shoes, mirrored pedestal
like so many found object installations, superstar seeks to question the boundary between high art and kitsch. the appropriated hot pink barbie doll shoes play with notions of scale, commodity culture, and especially camp. the mirrored pedestal and with the hot pink color of the shoes are a nod to disco-chic, while the title references brown alum todd haynes' camp classic, 'superstar: the karen carpenter story.' in the aforementioned film, the musical singing group the carpenters are depicted using barbie dolls; thus, superstar (the found object) also foregrounds its intertextuality.
